Course Overview:
This course outlines the components and requirements of a therapeutic counseling session and integrates them with concepts from the Therapeutic Client Communication program. In a simulated counseling session with a 16 year old with recurrent asthma, the learner identifies the phases of the counseling session and describes their characteristics. In working through the client's present feelings, thoughts, behavior, and situational issues, the learner helps the client to plan constructive changes.
Course Objectives:
By completion of the program, the learner will be able to:
- identify five characteristics of a therapeutic counseling session.
- identify three requirements for a therapeutic counseling session.
- describe three situations when a counseling session is inappropriate.
- define the five phases of a therapeutic counseling session.
- describe the characteristics of each phase of a therapeutic counseling session.
- identify the phases of therapeutic counseling in a simulated counseling session.
- differentiate between therapeutic and nontherapeutic communication in a simulated counseling session.
