Course Overview:
Fortunately, instead of resulting in a successful suicide, Mr. David's attempt to asphyxiate himself with carbon monoxide has brought him to a psychiatric inpatient unit. During the course of this simulation, Mr. David will make several other attempts to kill himself. The learner will intervene to prevent this by differentiating facts from myths about suicide; recognizing clues indicating increased suicide precautions; employing a therapeutic milieu; monitoring antidepressant medication administration; and developing an appropriate discharge plan.
Course Objectives:
After completion of this learning activity, the learner will be able to:
- differentiate facts from myths about suicide.
- recognize selected clues indicating increased suicide risk.
- use a suicidal intention scale to assess suicide risk.
- use written guidelines to select the appropriate level of suicide precautions for a client.
- describe features of a therapeutic milieu for suicidal clients.
- apply the nursing process in the care of a client receiving antidepressant medication.
- apply the nursing process in the care of a suicidal client who is hospitalized on a psychiatric unit.
