Course Overview:

Clients' values and belief systems affect their willingness to accept care and education offered by health care providers. Values and beliefs are often culturally determined. This course prepares learners to deliver culturally sensitive nursing care. This cultual sensitivity embodies respect for others and their cultures; awareness of culturally determined behaviors and beliefs; a willingness to modify care; and client advocacy when necessary. The program examines four major cultural groups within the United States -- Native Americans, Asian Americans, Latino Americans, and African Americans -- with regard to beliefs about health and illness; medical diagnoses common to the culture; folk illnesses found within the culture; family relationships; verbal and non-verbal communication patterns, including space and time orientation; dietary practices; attitudes and behaviors associated with birth and death; and folk health practices. Learner understanding of these concepts in evaluated in simulated client situations throughout the course.
