Course Overview:

As a staff nurse at Community Mental Health Center, the learner provides care for seven simulated clients with anxiety-related disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder; agoraphobia; social phobia; post traumatic stress disorder; obsessive-compulsive disorder; hypochondriasis; and somatoform disorder. For each client the learner identifies objective and subjective evidence of anxiety and assesses the level of anxiety based on severity of symptoms. After determining realistic outcomes for clients with anxiety-related disorders, the learner identifies nursing interventions and treatment modalities designed to bring about the desired outcomes.

Course Objectives:

After completion of this learning activity, the learner will be able to:

  • identify the classic clinical picture of the anxiety-related disorders discussed in the simulation, including generalized anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia, post traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, hypochondriasis, and somatoform pain disorder.
  • differentiate fear from anxiety.
  • identify objective and subjective evidence of anxiety.
  • assess level of anxiety based on severity of symptoms.
  • determine assessment strategies designed to elicit data relevant to care of a client with an anxiety-related disorder.
  • formulate nursing diagnoses that can be used when working with a client with an anxiety-related disorder.
  • propose realistic outcomes for clients with anxiety-related disorders.
  • identify nursing interventions designed to bring about desired outcomes for clients with anxiety-related disorders.
  • evaluate the effectiveness of care based on outcome criteria.
  • distinguish between ego alien (dystonic) and ego syntonic symptoms.
  • identify treatment modalities useful with selected anxiety-related disorders.
